Russian tea drinking has many facets and is multifaceted. Tea drinking in noble families is most closely related to British tea drinking. Merchant tea drinking, the kind so beautifully depicted by Kustodiev in his paintings, has truly Russian roots. Peasant tea drinking is a unique genre altogether. But they share one unifying element found nowhere else—the samovar, which was on the tables of both peasants and tsars. The types and varieties of Russian tea, as well as their history, deserve a separate discussion.
The history, traditions, and peculiarities of Russian tea drinking across social strata, as well as Russian tea and its history, are covered in our eponymous seminar.
